13 Feb 10 Best Instagram Photos Of Cape Town’s Lightning Storm
We don’t get much lightning in Cape Town. In fact I can’t remember one lightening storm during my whole university career. As Cape Town’s climate changes more and more summer rain storms are rolling into the city and summer storms mean more lightning and glorious thunder in the mother city.
There is nothing like going to sleep to the flash of lightning and the rolling thunder that accompanies it. Most people who grew up in Cape Town have rarely experienced this, so whenever there is a storm the people of our coastal city are left in awe and the many fantastic photographers who call Cape Town their home rush out into the night to try and catch the fleeting flashes of light.
Here are the some of the best pics from the amazing lightning storm from the 13th of February.
Yesterday Cape Town experienced some of the craziest weather we have seen in a long time. It started with a thunderstorm during the afternoon in 30c plus heat, which then turned to heavy rain, and then some hail and back to thunder and rain in the evening. A massive supercell moved in over the city and lightning and rain came down for hours. I just happened to have been at the right place to watch it all go down. This shot has been 3 years in the making and finally last night all the elements came together in perfect unity ⛈
Well, im sure you’ll see plenty lightning shots today and in the coming days. Believe me, what happened last night in Cape Town is far from common, I’ve been wanting this shot for a VERY long time. Many times I have tried and not pulled off this type of shot, I was convinced that table mountain has some weird energy that prevents lightning from hitting it! It’s was awesome to share this special occasion with my mate @instacptguy who got plenty great shots too! This is a single frame (not stacked) shot of the lightning ?⛈
This photo is from just over 2.5hours ago. Not part of my sunrise series but too incredible to not share immediately. Today was my birthday, one I confess I approached with little enthusiasm. Starting out with a sunrise hike, accompanied by my legendary brother @pwspeirs & ending with me alone in the velt between lions head & signal hill. This storm was rapidly approaching Cape Town & I'm standing there frantically (in fear) trying to capture the moment. In the end the storm engulfed me and the moutain. It struck a bolt so close i felt the land shudder underneath me. I can't think of a more exhilarating way to end off my B-Day & just to think I was about to go to sleep at 9pm ?
Incredibly blessed by some much needed rain in Cape Town yesterday.. Isn’t it amazing how it came out of nowhere with no predictions, God is so good. This was just one of many images taken alongside my buddy @alexcpt from n Blouberg last night. Be sure to look at his image too. #CapeTown #SouthAfrica #CityOfCapeTownSkies #SouthAfricanSkies #ThisIsSouthAfrica #CapeTownIsAwesome #HeinrichKnoetzePhotography Professional Account: @heinrichknoetzephotography www.heinrichknoetze.com
